Digitalis

Digitalis refers to the genus of foxglove plants (Digitalis purpurea) and the heart medicines derived from them, which contain powerful cardiac glycosides like digoxin used to treat heart failure and arrhythmias by strengthening heart muscle contractions, though the plant itself is highly poisonous if misused. These compounds work by inhibiting a key enzyme (Na⁺-K⁺-ATPase), increasing calcium in heart cells, and improving blood flow, but require careful dosing due to their narrow therapeutic window.
